I'm typing this 15 minutes after returning from 2 hours by myself in the woods near my home. Every time i go out there i recall the freedom and initiative I cultivated at about your son's age through similar excursions. I think the Last Child in the Woods makes a lot of points about fear as a barrier to children's experience of solitude and nature. There is fear that the children won't be safe (from animals, exposure, or Weird People) and also fear that the kids will break nature. I thought his annalysis was spot on, and it gave me some lines to re-assure my nervous neighbors with.
