Every photograph on this site comes from one habit. Lying flat in wet leaf litter, kneeling in roadside ditches, wading the river shallows of North and Central America, waiting for a small animal to forget I am there. I shoot low and close, at eye level with a frog or a beetle, because that is where empathy starts. What follows is the field this eye was trained on. Three catalogs. The amphibians, the arthropods, then the field work that reached print.
Frogs and salamanders, shot low and close enough to provoke an experience of empathy.
The primary operators of our ecosystems. Look twice before you swipe past these small engineers.
The field work, put to use. These photographs were made for and printed in science books and educational design, where one clear image carries what a paragraph cannot.
